Field Trip
Conference participants will have the opportunity to explore the scenic Province of Béjaïa, located on Algeria's Mediterranean coast. The excursion will feature visits to Pic des Singes (Monkey Peak), a 430-meter summit at Cap Carbon that serves as one of the habitats for the endangered Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus), the only surviving macaque species in Africa. The tour includes Gouraya National Park with its dramatic Mediterranean cliffs and diverse ecosystems, Cap Carbon in the Tell Atlas range, and Cap Aokas with its spectacular coastal scenery. Participants will also explore the historic Casbah of Béjaïa, an ancient fortified citadel originally built during the Almohad period in 1154 AD, and subsequently developed under Ottoman rule, unveiling the region's rich Berber, Islamic, and Ottoman heritage.
